Orientation for Bachelor of Creative Industries at the Cairns Campus of James Cook University.

Faculty member, artist and lecturer Jill Chism guided us through an exercise in creative listening – what follows are my impressions from that exercise.

whirring hum of computer fan

whistling buzz of florescent lights

soft breathing of students

staccato writing

whispering sheets of paper sliding on laminated desktops

seats creaking and groaning

muted voices from adjacent rooms

soft footfalls

roller door grinding in it’s tracks

clickety-clack of door latch as door opens

musical birdsong and excited voices in distance

distant rumble of aircraft and machinery outside

We also drew our impression of the sounds we heard. This is a section of the audible landscape I rendered.
